Joseph Cardenas
Joseph Cardenas, Chief Information Officer and Vice President, Employers Direct Insurance Company
Joseph A. Cardenas, Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Employers Direct Insurance Company, is a computer scientist and systems software specialist who has led information technology for several leading insurance and high-tech corporations. He was part of the early team at Employers Direct at inception and left in April 2005 to join SalesForce.com as Senior Vice President and CIO. Prior to Employers Direct, Joe served four years as Vice President and CIO of Autodesk, Inc. Joe also served as Senior Vice President of Fremont Compensation Insurance Group from 1986-1992 and from 1996-1998, and was Vice President of Information Technology for Oracle Corporation from 1993-1996. He has also held information technology positions with Transamerica Insurance, NCR, Hyatt Hotels, and Wells Fargo Bank.

Mr. Cardenas is a leader in aggressive deployment of software as a service (SaaS). Heavy utilization of such services has allowed Cardenas to minimize internal infrastructure and staff. This strategy has allowed quicker systems implementation and also allows internal staff to concentrate Insurance specific systems. This strategy was put to the test when EDIC initially started business. Cardenas assembled application service providers, infrastructure service providers and a small team of consultants to put all critical systems in place in a matter of several months – all with no internal staff. Using traditional methodologies would have significantly delayed EDIC's entry into the marketplace.

Cardenas is also a leader in establishing a rich partnership with the business through utilizing advanced technologies (such as advanced rules engines) that allow direct management of important segments of system behavior by the business (with some help from IT). An example this was the EDIC implementation of the Guidewire claims processing system. Under Cardenas' leadership responsibility for maintaining the claims system rules engine was move to EDIC Claims. Cardenas is strong advocate of pulling back the veil of IT secrecy and forging a business partnership.

Other accomplishments by Cardenas are insurance industry pioneering use of CRM technology (Salesforce.com) as a generalized repository of information related to the total business relationship with the customer.
